Jykan WaterFlood hazard and climate risk

Training

Short, practical courses for engineers and planners who need to model floods and use climate data with confidence. Taught by practitioners who do this work, built around your own study area where possible.

HEC-RAS fundamentals

2 daysPrivate or semi-privateOnline or on site

Participants complete a guided 1D modelling exercise on a prepared dataset and learn to judge model setup, what calibration needs, and where the main uncertainties sit

  • Terrain, cross-sections and roughness
  • Steady and unsteady flow, bridges and culverts
  • What calibration requires, sensitivity and common errors
  • Floodplain mapping with RAS Mapper

HEC-RAS 2D

2 daysPrivate or semi-privatePrerequisite: fundamentals or equivalent

Two-dimensional modelling for floodplain and urban flows on a prepared dataset, and the judgment calls that decide whether a 2D model is credible. Dam-break, levee and coupled 1D/2D topics are available as separate half-day modules.

  • Mesh design, breaklines and structures
  • Rain-on-grid basics
  • Stability, run time and result checking
  • Presenting results to non-modellers

Climate data for engineers

1 dayPrivate or semi-privateOnline or on site

How to get from climate model output to design inputs without over- or under-stating what the data can support

  • Scenarios, warming levels and ensembles
  • Downscaling and bias correction, what they do and don't fix
  • Climate-adjusted IDF curves and design storms
  • Reading and reviewing someone else's climate study

Formats: private sessions for one organization (up to 10 participants), or semi-private cohorts of 4 to 6 from different organizations. A detailed syllabus is sent before booking. Course datasets and notes are provided; HEC-RAS itself is free from the US Army Corps of Engineers.
